between this world and the other
soles of feet alert as a tightrope walkerʻs
skin attuned to shifts in wind and mood
ear searching for a clue
you follow the tilt downward
to the place where edge and river meet
every moment alert to how
the voices murmur from canyon’s depths –
this way, come find us…
alert to: what is the point here?
and why is nothing clear?
alert to the longing for an answer
and the response of muffled laughter
the edge is changing
into a hand reaching across time
a gesture you didnʻt know you needed
didnʻt feel yourself sinking
back into the bed of stones
but stones change too
becoming easier to roll
until you find yourself lifted
again into the steady current
they are changing the edge
those ancient tricksters –
never a linear path through time
