Fangyuan Cao (Sam) – The Refugee
One of my biggest inspirations for this piece is a painting by Eduard Manet titled “The Rue Mosnier Dressed with Flags”, which shows a man missing a leg from the Franco-Prussian war walking down a street filled with nationalistic flags intended to celebrate just that war. What I tried to accomplish in my piece is similar: Wars may have winners and losers on an international scale, but no matter what war, one group always loses – the ordinary citizens. My drawing was created with charcoal to make the composition more dramatic and unobscured.
