William Hulst – Alter to Cannibalism

This piece was created initially with the goal of exploring non-conventional portraiture through collage. This was done by taking various images of myself and testing different methods of combining them with drawn work.
I also began experimenting with using cardboard in order to create a physical depth. After finalizing the face and halo, I proceeded to build around it, focusing primarily on drawn patterns as well as the use of various codes and symbology.
I made some use of more traditional drawn art, as seen in the faces to the left and right of the primary subject, the eyes of the primary subject, and the mouth near the base of the piece.
Finally, I constructed the skeleton’s frame of sculpture wire before overlaying it with foam clay. I created the head separately before attaching it.
This piece is intended to be viewed whilst hung on a wall.
