Description

This work was created as an exploration of architectural form, as well as a practice of translating images into objects, with inspiration from the artist duo Cross Lypka. Atlas’s front contains a pillar-like niche in the shape of a vase, in reference to the Rubin’s Vase illusion, which depicts a vase able to be viewed as form or negative space. Meanwhile, the back features the Greek titan Atlas, who holds the heavens on his shoulders. The work is based on classical and baroque atlases and caryatids, pillars in the form of human figures. Atlas was a slab built from clay, then glazed with ceramic glaze and glass.
