Description

The inspiration behind this piece was the transformation of many tree roots into one tree. I wanted to portray something small (like coils for tree roots) cohesively coming together to create something bigger (like the pieces of the pot for a tree stump.) The uniqueness of each coil in the upper part of the vase contrasts with the consistent shape of the coils in the middle part to show the variability of shapes and patterns in nature. To make this piece, I threw a bowl on the wheel, which I later cut the top piece off in a ring. I then rolled coils and attached them how I wanted them, but also in a way that enforced stability.
