Olivia Ting – Tiger Peony
Painted with traditional Chinese brushes and watercolor inks, this piece illustrates a peony whose petals bloom outwards in all directions. The focal point is the center of the peony, with stamen detailed in dark ink. The title (Chinese characters written vertically on the left) reads simply, “Peony”, signed with the date and my name on the furthest left column, as well as a red stamp with the Chinese character for heart. The goal is to illustrate the simplicity of nature in a minimalistic style of Chinese painting, capturing the silhouette of the flower with fine details to compliment it in the texturing of the stem and the many stamen that bloom from the peony’s core.
