Description
In 2019 I was fortunate to take in the record-breaking Hilma af Klint exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. Prior to this, I was totally unfamiliar with her work and her life. To say I was stunned and inspired is an understatement.
Born in Sweden in 1862, af Klint was an artist and mystic who had a great interest in botany, mathematics, symbolism and spiritism. These interests are clearly recognizable in her large body of work. In 1906 when she was 44, af Klint created her first series of large and luminous abstract paintings. Much of her abstract art is now recognized as predating the abstract work of Kandinsky and Mondrian.
After visiting the Guggenheim exhibition and watching the 2019 documentary film Beyond the Visible: Hilma af Klint, I was motivated to create a biblio-object/artist’s book to honor Hilma af Klint’s life and accomplishments.
