Description

“هر چه مرا تبر زدی، زخم نشد، جوانه شد!”

“I sprout exactly from where you aimed to axe me down many times”

This work honors the Iranian women and girls who were shot in the eyes during the Woman, Life, Freedom protests after Mahsa Amini’s murder in Sep 2022. The regime’s morality police deliberately targeted sensitive part of protestors; mostly eyes, blinding over 400 protesters, leaving many with permanent nerve and brain injuries.

Later, 120 of these survivors found exile at UC Berkeley. From there, they declared to the world: “Thank you, Islamic Barbaric government of Iran, for taking one of our eyes—so the world could finally open its eyes to the brutality of Islamist fundamentalism.”

Their message is one of resilience: “I sprouted from where you aimed to axe me down.”
