I am spellbound by Willem de Kooning’s paintings. The fluid energetic brush strokes and the wild gestures and shapes make his paintings feel so alive to me. It’s hard to describe his signature style in words, but I can always recognize it — a feeling of raw creative freedom, like he never held back. He was a Dutch immigrant who stowed away on a ship to get to America in 1926, and later married Elaine de Kooning, another artist who inspires me. What a power couple they must have been back in the day as Abstract Expressionism took root in New York. Thinking about de Kooning’s personal life story adds to the magic I feel when standing in front of his work.
