Description

I created a flimsy, malleable representation of razor wire used on the Rio Grande border to comment on the subjective nature of political borders, and the harm caused by the hyper-aggressive reinforcement of these borders by Operation Lone Star in Texas. Between the knots are the flags of Venezuela, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico, and the number of immigrants from those countries encountered on the Rio Grande border between March 2021 and May 2024 written in Spanish (eg. trescientos ochenta y ocho mil dieciocho instead of 388,018). Through researching and creating this piece I wanted to not only raise awareness but to understand for myself where I, as a personally unaffected Hispanic person, fit into this conflict.
