Description

I used acrylic paint, guash, watercolor, and a black paint pen. I was heavily inspired by Wassily Kandinsky’s composition eight and Italian futurism and cubism. My project, Caught in the Current, expresses the feeling of being overwhelmed by the fast-paced nature of decision-making, where choices flow like an unstoppable current. Using the elements of line, shape, value, color, and space, I created a composition that conveys movement, imbalance, and emotional tension. The shapes and lines are scattered and layered throughout the piece which represents the chaos and constancy of decision-making, similar to “stepping stones” that guide yet destabilize one’s path. The varying thickness and direction of lines contribute to a sense of motion and restlessness, allowing each shape to take on different symbolic meanings, much like how different choices lead to unknown outcomes. The principle of movement is achieved through the dynamic arrangement of geometric and organic forms, leading the eye across the canvas in an unpredictable, almost spiraling motion. This spiral, created through the use of space, conveys the feeling of time slipping away, with the negative space between the clustered shapes creating a sense of imbalance—reflecting the uncertainty of life and mortality. The principle of contrast is also essential, as the interplay between bold, saturated colors and muted tones enhances the emotional intensity of the piece. Value plays a crucial role in establishing weight and depth, where darker areas anchor certain elements, creating a contrast between moments of clarity and confusion. This contrast mirrors the experience of navigating difficult choices, where some decisions feel solid while others feel fleeting or dreamlike.

I made this project because as a senior there is a surplus of decisions we have to make for our future, it is really intense, but also everyone at any point in their life is going through this cycle, theirs might be more simplistic or even more chaotic. My AP Art Concentration focuses around how our outer world is a reflection of our inner world, this has to do with mindsets and how perception transforms reality. Also, my goal is to convey in physical elements of consciousness and reality but in an abstract way. Thank you, hope you like it!
