Description
This piece, “ID”, is a continuation of my previous, “EGO”, which explored Freud’s concept of the same name. Using similar mediums to that work, acrylic inks, I created a basic blocking for where I wanted the different elements of the piece to align before going in with acrylics and modeling paste to add texture and grittiness to it. I wanted to emphasize the real, tangible quality of my work because the id is the very raw and primitive part of ourselves, the wolves representing that aspect, and its also the part of our self that is there since birth, which is why I chose to use the negative space in the center to create the silhouette of a fetus. The wolves surround the fetus because, while the id can bring harm to ourselves and others through impulse and violence, it’s ultimately there to protect us, to help us survive. Although it can be easy to forget, we are still animals.
