Whenever I’m asked to name my favorite painter, it’s David Park. Seeing his large figure work in person has been transformative for me in my life as an artist. The thick expressive strokes he put on the canvas with huge brushes, and how he bent the compositional rules when he cropped his images. Park also walked a tightrope of how much to reveal, and what he could get away with leaving unstated, to let viewers fill in the blanks with their own imaginations. Finding that balance between abstraction and realism isn’t an easy thing to do. In an interview, Wayne Thiebaud said that “David wants his work to sting.”
And it does.
