With downcast eyes, this painting depicts a girl with a unreadable expression of mixed emotions. I embraced the stark contrast in the lights and shadows to depict the contrasting feelings and the irony of looking down yet looking into the light. Often paintings capture a face looking into light showing triumph, power and optimism. Here, the power of looking toward the light is subdued and calmed by the humility of the downward gaze. This is a representation of how it is not easy to be optimistic in difficult times. I used acrylic paint on an 18 x 24 inch canvas to create this piece.
