For this piece, I was inspired by photographs that my relatives sent me of their dog, Augustus. I wanted to use this piece as an opportunity to try out new techniques, like using ink wash to create a greater depth of value. Up until this point, In all of my ink drawings, I had created value solely using mark making with pens. I wanted to see what would happen if I created the values using washes of ink first, then using pens to create texture over top. Even though the subject matter of the piece is not that different than what I am used to, the techniques I tried were definitely a new challenge. I used India ink, drawing pens, and white gouache for highlights.
